Under-watched and under-appreciated gem of a film. This is a Dutch movie that won the 1997 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, though I don't remember ever hearing about it! This is a very character-driven movie (obviously.
..), has wonderful period sets and costumes (set in 1930s Rotterdam), and great casting. The lead actor seems like a dead ringer for Robert Downey, Jr. at times. Melancholy pervades this film and it is slow moving, but it works.
I just really like this movie.
