Review of Chappie (2015) by Hammers9025 P — 07 Sep 2015
So yeah, this is how reboots should be done. It's a modern day Short Circuit and there is totally nothing wrong with that, because all good writing can do is build off that formula, and take risks.
Which is exactly what Chappie does. Sure, it's mostly Short Circuit; Dev Patel is the new Steve Gutenberg, Alley Sheedy and her house overrun with abandoned pets is replaced with...well, Die Antwoord.
.. and, uh, they do a fine job at that, to say the least. Bald army dude is replaced with Hugh Jackman, and it's hilariously cheesy and awesome. Ultimately, it turns a bit more Robocop by the end, but the writing and character direction are appealing above everything else.
What makes Chappie superbly unique is that it almost feels like a live action anime.
