Review of Chappie (2015) by Dan W — 27 Mar 2016
Robocop meets Frankenstein in Neill Blomkamp's absorbing A.I. actioner.
As tense as The Terminator and as adorable as Short Circuit, Blomkamp's film brings together the best of cyborg sci-fi from across the years, striking the perfect balance between the twee and the tense; the dramatic and the charismatic.
Chappie is fast paced, ever-inventive and never dull, with silly villains, awesome aesthetics and respectable CGI - characterised by a texture and tangibility seldom seen in modern sci-fi. Blomkamp's film is a must-see for fans of the genre, but even those opposed won't be left feeling short-changed.
