Review of Chappie (2015) by Sagaciousfrank . — 27 May 2017
Total dross! Terrible acting, dialogue, storytelling, story, script, directing, and pacing. Terrible everything, except for perhaps CGI. The concept itself isn't bad, but it's so amateurishly executed and silly. There is far too much absurdness from the get-go. Also when the film starts, it's almost as if we've come into a film half way through already.
Try as it might to be funny, it's comes off as childish and puerile as Chappie itself. And what's with the subtitles for English speaking actors with a mild accent? I can understand what they're saying, Mr Blomkamp. I swear Neill Blomkamp is deliberately having a laugh at the audience's expense. Heck, this film makes 'Eylsium' seem pretty good, when even that is disappointing. It's looking as if 'District 9' was simply a fluke and one hit wonder, as that was a very good sci-fi film. And Weaver and Jackman ought to be ashamed to have signed up to this bilge. I turned 'Chappie' off after just over half way through, it's really that bad. If you want a sci-fi film about self-aware AI, watch Deus Ex: Machina' and avoid this tripe. 1/5*.
