Review of Chappie (2015) by Sam S — 01 Oct 2018
After reading some of the other, somewhat disappointing reviews, I have to wonder if we all saw the same movie. I see many are comparing this movie to the directors previous works, or music used, script, etc. I watch movies first and foremost because I want to be entertained. I rate each movie on its own merits regardless if its from a director with a history of successes or failures. Just because I may not be as familiar with technicalities of film making doesn't make it any more or less enjoyable for me. I think it's also safe to say that 95% of those who watch movies do so for the entertainment value.
In my opinion, that's where Chappie is an impressive movie. It's been the first movie in a long time that I've watched where I've experienced a wide variety of emotions. I experienced laughter, anger, excitement, and shed a number of tears. So many movies I've seen in recent years have been simply BLAH. Some of those blah movies were touted for their technical expertise, but the storyline and acting was Blah at best. If I don't experience a range of emotions, I see no point in watching the movie in the first place, it's empty.
