Soggy biopic enlivened by a stunning performance from Downey but buried by a tedious necessity to include every detail of Chaplin's life from birth to death, the lumpen talking-to-the-editor scenes in Switzerland, ghastly old-age make-up and the genuinely crass decision to undermine all of Downey's efforts by showing clips of the real Chaplin towards the end.
Some fascinating moments survive, but that's entirely because Chaplin was a fascinating man, not because this incompetent film does anything interesting or constructive with the source material.
