Review of Chaplin (2011) by Orlando N — 30 Jan 2011
Excellent! An amazing look at the life of one of cinema's greatest stars that does not disappoint in any way.The score and art direction are excellently done and rightfully earned the film's Oscar nominations in those respective categories.
The costume design also helps fully realize Victorian England, as well as other locations where Chaplin performed. The highlight of the film is obviously Downey Jr.'s performance as the immortal performer, which is nothing short of a revelation, especially during scenes where he plays the infamous character known as "The Tramp".
The fact that the cast and crew included actual film footage of Chaplin in the film is very refreshing and shows just how uncanny R.D.J. is in his portrayal. The film leaves no question unaswered about Chaplin's 88 years of life, which is quite a risk for any biopic and isn't done as often as it should be in the genre.
Indeed Attenborough has created yet another amazing film; a film that reminds the world why all the patrons of the stage and screen loved Charlie Chaplin so much.
