Review of Chaplin (1992) by Critic M — 07 Apr 2013
I've never understood why so many critics disliked this movie when it first came out. Try as I might, I cannot find much wrong with "Chaplin" at all. Aside from the fact that Robert Downey Jr.
's immaculate performance of Chaplin is probably the best of the past fifty years (I'm not kidding - just watch him in the role for five minutes and see what I mean), the writing, costuming, cinematography, etc.
are all superb. Perhaps "Chaplin" was released at the wrong time for people to truly appreciate it, but speaking as someone who got to experience it after it was already over a decade old, it has certainly settled in as quite the masterpiece.
It's one of the best hidden gems in film history - you won't be disappointed in seeking it out to experience it for yourself.
