Review of Chalk (2001) by James J — 17 Dec 2009
While Chalk does offer glimpses of great moments, the film is marred by a real lack of narrative spine. Instead, we see sketch after incomplete sketch of each of the main teachers, never really choosing to hone in on any particular one, until about halfway through, when Mr.
Lowrey is chosen out of the blue to occupy most of the rest of the film. There are many attempts at humor here, but most fall flat, and the brightest moments come, ironically, through the dry ineptitude of Mr.
Lowrey's teaching abilities at the beginning of the film. Disappointing.
