Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Amilcar A — 28 Mar 2011
Hmmm. Are movies supposed to make me think or are they 2 hour vapid options to not think? I always thought movies are supposed to entertain me, not test me.
Certified copy fucks with my reptilian brain with extreme ease. Not only are these clowns polyglots and switch languages with great ease but they also talk about complicated relationships. That sounds really boring right?
Well, not at all. Certified Copy is a great little movie that will be a critics' delight. Lamentably only critics will watch it since it's not multiplex ready. There are no falls, farts or explosions. This immediately eliminates 99% of the American audience preferences.
The story is about the relationship between two middle aged, sophisticated and intelligent adults. Their behavior is not very mature all the time but they compensate with quick forgiveness and some semblances of love.
What is really tricky about this movie is whether it's actually telling you the real story. There are so many options and twists. It truly takes the plot in a meandering trip.
The only reason this movie is not better is largely because of it's own virtues. Listen, I'm all for intelligent movies that challenge the audience but this was a bit obnoxious. Perhaps it could have mellowed out and have a happier ending. I would have enjoyed that.
