Review of Certain Women (2016) by Lori L — 07 Nov 2016
I really enjoyed this film and it was a very serene movie experience. I think Kelly Reichardt is one of the most underappreciated filmmakers working today, and it is a shame that films like this don't get enough recognition.
People these days don't have the patience for a film that is quiet, subdued, and humane. I loved how slow-paced it was and how grounded the story was. If you have seen any of Reichardt's previous films, you would know that it's not the fancy special effects or exciting car chases that she is interested in.
She is interested in making films about the lives of ordinary people living their lives, and watching this film is like sitting by rivers and listening to the sound of nature. It is peaceful, so Zen-like, a quality that you rarely see in a film, even for independent films.
It is beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and just stays with you for a very long time. "Certain Women" is a beautiful work of art.
