Review of Centurion (2010) by Jarett B — 06 Dec 2010
I'm not ready to throw the towel in on Neil Marshall yet. He surprised the shit out of me with Dog Soldiers and overcame any and all expectations I had for The Descent. After the car-wreck that is Doomsday, I was afraid to watch Centurion.
The film runs for 90 minutes and for 75 of those minutes I was surprised (yet again) at how entertaining the film was! Marshall is back I said! Enter a character named 'The Witch' who, if all witched looked like her, took any credibility the story had and placed it squarely in her perfect hair and beautiful face (with a scar on it!! Oh my God, she's hideous!).
Enter the typical shit that happens when a handsome fella (Fassbender) and a looker of a lady 'find' each other. Like a steep hill, it was all downhill from here folks. I was removed from the historical and action packed spell that the film placed me under; I became extremely critical and angry, as if I was cheated on by the film (which, I feel I was.
..). My Plead: Mr. Marshall. Please go back to low-budget independently financed films that give you (not some Brit schmuck) total control. It is so painfully obvious that 'some mysterious force' stepped in here and fucked with all that was good.
Could it have been the cast themselves?? It's possible as this is as high-profile a group that Marshall has worked with. Who knows? All I know is that Cunningham is the 'go-to guy' and he is not afraid to work on a project with balls.
Team Marshall with Liam again, enter a good script, give Marshall control of the project, and sit back for some film magic.
