Neil Marshall's Centurion seems to be taking a lot of flack from people who expected it to be some kind of grand epic (like "Gladiator"). However, that is clearly not what this movie is trying to be. Instead, it attempts to be something much more attainable for a movie with its budget: a blood-soaked, bare bones Western that swaps the vast deserts of the American West for the wilds of Britain in the early 2nd Century AD.

The movie is not particularly intelligent or profound, and perhaps the cast is too good for a simple genre exercise such as this. That being said, the actors do what they can to make the most of the movie's unremarkable plot and generally acquit themselves well.

Despite the film's shortcomings, Neil Marshall excels at delivering good, gory entertainment. And while I may nitpick the movie's shallowness, I can't help but take guilty pleasure in watching the intense, blood-soaked badassery that he throws up on the screen.
