Review of Cemetery Man (1994) by Steve O — 14 Jun 2008
Proof that horror films can be art as well as splatterfests. One of my all-time favorites. Cemetery Man struck me over the head when I first saw it, and it struck me again tonight.
It's admittedly not a whole lot on the surface. It's fairly straightforward stylistically, with your standard zombie movie riffs. Head shots, grapefruit-sized bullet holes, impalements, it's all here.
What sets this film apart for me personally is just how deep it is. It's true meaning is something that has always been up for debate, and has always intrigued me. There are deeper films, sure, but a deep film masked in B-movie zombie fare? That's commendable, and that's why I love it so much. It's wholly unique, with nothing else quite like it anywhere else on the planet. Not for everyone, but an inspiration for me in its execution and scope.
