Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Phil N — 18 Apr 2010
Gervais draws upon his experience of growing up in a small town in the seventies in this comedy-drama. It centres on a young lad starting his first job selling insurance whose eyes are opened to a wider world outside from hsi boss's daughter, who he falls for.
The dynamic between him and his boss's family is nicely played - and the Winners' party is acutely funny - but the scenes with his best mates are less successful, too familiar and formulaic. Enjoyable yes, but Gervais has yet to transfer his TV talent to cinematic gold.
