Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Jamie D — 25 Apr 2010
Surely one of the best films of the year :) So far anyway of course. Just loved everything about it. I had a few doubts about this film before I saw it, as the trailer wasn't great but I was gonna see it anyway. C'mon, it's Ricky Gervais' and Stephen Merchant's cinematic debut together :D And boy, was it a treat. And anyone who hasn't seen it is certainly in for a treat :D It's a beautiful and hilarious story of three best friends who learn about life, few want to leave Cemetary Junction and do something with their lives. They make observations on other people around them. Such as Emily Watson's character whose life turns into an uneventful one with her husband played by Ralph Fiennes. Also, a heartbreaking moment with a character at the dad's work, who in return for working in a job he didn't overlly enjoy, gets a glass fruit bowl.
Now, it may sound like a whole statement for 'leave your towns now and go out their and do something amazing with your lives.' But it really isn't. Infact, Gervais clearly says in interviews that it isn't really saying that. It's a film saying that you should do what you want to do in life, and mostly your life can be amazing in the first place but you don't really realize it. Whatever you want to do and whoever you have in your life, it's something to cherish and just be yourself.
The acting is great. The three main characters are very loveable, and I'm sure nearly everyone can relate to at least one of them. I saw aspects of me in them, mostly in ways Snork! :D Who was awesome. Every character was great.
Amazing cinematography. RG and SM said that they loved every single second of what they have created. Every shot of the film. And from the beginning shot to the very end shot, it is quite simply perfect. A hilarious, feel-good drama/comedy. A certain masterpiece from the boys themselves :).
Oh, and look out for the hysterically great cameos :D.
