Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Ed F — 03 Sep 2010
Not as 'hilarious' as some critics are hailing it, and that is the films point. Quite the opposite, the film intends to be dramatic and gritty, exploring the entrapped lives of these rebelious youths, but the tone isnt believable.
It feels as if it wants to be funny and dramatic at the same time, which is makes the bulk of the sequences uneasy and tedious. When the film tries to be funny, it fails, but when it is dramatic, it does bare a few good scenes.
Emily Mortimor and Ralph Fiennes are the best thing in it but their subplot is unfortunately underused, and the finale owes far too much to The Graduate. Still, this is a remarkable step up for Gervais after the abysmal 'The Invention of Lying'.
Very overrated.
