Review of Cedar Rapids (2011) by Iain R — 23 Nov 2011
This was a rather mild and very conventional story of a small town, straight laced, unexposed man who travels to a conference in Cedar Rapids to deliver a speech but finds himself wooed by some collegues in the more daring side of life.
It's an interesting story, and for all it's drinking, drug taking, and infidelity, I was surprised to find this a remarkably sweet movie held together by a fantastic cast and a director who obviously knows where to restrain the loutish comedy which seems to appear in every comic movie nowadays.
It's tender, well structured and likeable, and while at times it borders a little too much into the safe comfort of conventions, its always an entertaining movie. And that's largely due to the actors who create so much energy, warmness, care and enthusiasm for their characters that despite their misgivings you can't help but love them.
And so while it's nothing particularly new or daring, it does it's job very nicely, and made for very pleasant viewing.
