Review of Cedar Rapids (2011) by Jillian L — 20 Feb 2012
So, everyone knows the old joke about how [insert mild mannered business here] conventions are freaking crazy. So, personally I was always wondering when someone would just make a movie about those actual conventions instead of just talking about it.
Well, this movie delivers. The ensemble cast in this movie is simply hilarious as they all navigate the insane weekend. Of course, Ed Helms and John C. Reilly lead the cast in most of the hilariousness, but Anne Heche, Alia Shawkat, Isiah Whitlock, Kurtwood Smith, and Mike O' Malley deliver some real laughs as well.
The visuals in this movie are hilarious. Especially the insurance office that hasn't quite made it to the 21st century, the local insurance commercials, just really good stuff going on. Also, the story itself has a good balance of showing the mild/cheesy stuff that the convention puts on during the day (scavenger hunt, celebrity impersonators) juxtaposed against what really goes on at night (i think you get what I mean haha) Overall, a solid comedy that is pretty funny and tries to hide that it actually has some heart, but that part of the story shows through as well.
