This movies great. Everyone involved gives great effort and John Water's wrote a really funny script. He's not attempting to actually strike deeply at the heart of Hollywood or any other mess, he just makes a really funny satire and semi-autobiographical movie.
This is the way he used to make them. You can't take his aim to be ultra-serious or "naive", because Water's (as usual) spends an equal amount of time making fun of himself and his own worldly view as he does screwing with everyone else.
Lighten up and enjoy see Adrian Grenier get stuck in a k hole. Besides it's better and much more original than most shit today.
