Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Steven B — 12 May 2011
Werner Herzog is amazing. He approaches the most difficult subjects with complete confidence and is successful in almost every case. In case you are unaware, the Chauvet Cave in France was 'discovered' in 1994 and is not open to the public. It is the subject some of the most intensive and collaborative scientific study of any anthropological site in the world. The topic are the amazing wall paintings representing the oldest known human art work in the world. Some of these incredible paintings go back 30,000 years and are an amazing record of the human intellect.
Herzog made the bold choice of filming in 3D even though he had to go with minimal equipment and had only a few weeks access. The result is one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. The people who painted this used the curvature of the cave in the paintings and only 3D would have demonstrated this.
Everyone in the audience was enthralled and really seemed to be impressed. This film is in very limited release and I highly recommend it if you get the chance to see it.
