Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Bud N — 05 May 2011
It's not that the subject matter itself is uninteresting, but Werner Herzog's documentary about his expedition into Chauvet Cave to view some of the oldest known art made by man -- is rather dull.
I think part of the reason I've never really developed into being a full-on Herzog fan is that his (admittedly distinctive) filmmaking style kinda bores me. There are only so many shots of ancient cave drawings set to ominous choral music that one can view before you start getting hungry/checking your watch/what have you.
This is just my humble opinion, of course, but I like my films to...you know...at least go somewhere. This includes documentaries. On the plus side -- the subject matter itself is inherently interesting, the artwork is indeed awe-inspiring, and the 3-D is first rate.
I just wish the film itself was more involving.
