Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Courtney S — 08 Jul 2011
Works better than it looks on paper, Herzog largely lets the art and the impossible accretion of millenia wash over you. We cut away occasionally to lend context to the space and that only increases the wonder.
What led these crazed apes to begin abstracting the thin margins of their struggle to survive? In other caves they are digging up the oldest flutes, in another little singular filigree of our existence.
The score, like the cinematography, is primitive and eerie and sublime.
