Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Paul L — 12 Nov 2011
A stunning exploration of ancient rock art found in previously undiscovered caves in France by acclaimed film maker Werner Herzog.
Herzog documents what he argues to be the earliest roots of cinema in artworks so ancient that almost defy comprehension.
Herzog invites you to marvel at the rock arts technical sophistication but also meditate on its lost meaning.
Herzog suggests that despite our best endeavours to record our own world that ultimately it's meaning too will be just mere speculation at the hands of academics.
Yet the rock art leaves an undoubtedly human impression on the spectator, from this a connection between their world and ours can be felt. This sensation in itself steals the show when you consider these works where made 32,000 years ago and yet they remain instantly recognisable to the modern eye as drawn by the expressive hand of the artist.
