Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Dave C — 07 Feb 2012
As a film about simple cave drawings it has the potential to be limited in scope. What the documentary does though, to it's credit, is use commentary to bring the questions surrounding these paintings alive.
Stated to be the oldest drawings found of human origin, Herzog takes us for a tour of a largely unknown discovery that has been off limits to any public viewing until now. And playing mostly as the narrator, Herzog has an innate interest in what these drawings can tell us about the development of the arts.
And in his examination we find some bizarre questions, a lot of history, and a lot of patient shots of the drawings. To be sure, if you do not have an appreciation for history you very likely might see this film as less than exciting.
But the component of questions of the human spirit do help this film take on another dimension.
