Review of Cats Don't Dance (1997) by Ben K — 12 May 2007
An overlooked animated masterpiece, easily besting...let's say...every animated movie Disney has made for 50 years? Yeah, we'll call it at that just to be nice.
The movie tells the tale of the talented song-and-dance cat Danny, who is about to both learn and teach a lesson, in 1939 Hollywood. On his way he meets gluttonous busdrivers with Brooklyn accents, bizarre stylized Clark Gables and evil little girls who are more psychotic than all Jack Nicholson's movie characters combined.
Another great thing about this movie is the music, made by underrated composer Randy Newman. Actually, this movie kills every prejudice I have on movies with talking/singing/dancing animals. Nearly every song actually has integrity, be it in musical or comical sense.
This movie blends together the Golden Age of Hollywood together with jaw-dropping over-the-top animation and unforgettable musical numbers.
Just forget that you're supposed to act like an adult and watch this. Definitely the best animated movie ever made.
