Review of Cats Don't Dance (1997) by Jonathan H — 22 May 2008
A friend let me borrow this movie and I was surprised to find a real gem. I'm not all that into jazz but I love the old school big band themes. However, I've sorta always cringed when characters bursted out into song and dance in a musical, whether it's Dinsey or Sound of Music. Wish there was more dialogue, as I do for most musicals.
It's hard not to fall in love with most of the characters. The voice acting is great, and the dialogue is as colorful as the animation. It was a relief from Disney-theme stories of a prince and princess. It's a real shame this film had a dismal release. I would blame that on its crappy trailer and lack of PR. Did they even hold a premiere? It's a light-hearted, anti-cynic, great rewatchable film. I regret I never got to see this in the glorius film format. Maybe one day.
