Review of Catfish (2010) by Emily A — 15 Apr 2011
Whoa. "Don't let anyone tell you what it is" is right. Um, I'm not certain how to describe this movie without giving anything away. It kind of defies easy explanation. At its core, this movie is about a photographer in New York that makes friends with a painter through Facebook.
Little by little the identity of his friend becomes less clear, and he sets out to investigate her. This might be a documentary, but it wasn't presented as such at the film festival where this premiered.
In fact, the idea of obsessing about what's true and what's not in this movie are kind of the point, and I'm kind of tantalized by the fact that they left that ambiguous. This is a very challenging movie, and it leaves the audience to draw its own conclusions.
Nev Schulman is the main character, and he's really quite charming. This movie raised an interesting question for me: what if peeling back layers of artifice doesn't actually bring you any closer to reality? Does the distinction between fact and fiction even matter anymore?
