Review of Catfish (2010) by Troy F — 30 Mar 2014
Though arguably staged, Catfish is worth watching. It has a great setup, and does have you on the edge of where a person's journey to seek a female love interest he met online goes. It doesn't go where you expect it to, which without directly pointing out what actually happens, is somewhat disappointing.
What feels like a build-up to a dark turn becomes a rather emotional one. Quite inconsistent, but plausible. The direction it goes in feels more honest though, not going for the cheap thrills and creep factor as much, but more so tackling the human side of things.
Basically, you leave the film with less impact than you hoped to attain, but satisfied as well. A gripping viewing, but I don't imagine this holding up in repeat viewings though...
