Review of Catfish (2010) by Jiana W — 22 May 2013
This is about a young guy who strikes up a penpal friendship with a kid, then eventually the kid's family members. He winds up falling for the kid's older sister. Did we mention he's never met any of these people before? What he begins to realize is that nothing is what it appears to be, and he and his buddies, who began documenting Nev's budding friendships with these people, decide to get to the bottom of their suspicions.
It's almost like a thriller, kind of. You're just waiting, glued to your seat all the way through wondering what will come of all this. I do not, in any sense of the word, feel sorry for Nev. He had it coming. With all that technology at his fingertips, he never *once* thought, "Hey, maybe we can have a video chat?".
The woman, however, is a pretty sympathetic character. She is an extraordinarily talented artist, but clearly off her rocker if she was able to continue to lie like that until being busted.
If you've been "catfished", you are not bright. That may sound harsh but, when all is said and done and the initial emotions of pain and betrayal are pushed aside, you are hella drove for falling head over heels for someone when you not only have never met them in person, but you haven't at the very least even *video-chatted* with them. I imagine people who do that are incredibly lonely in some sense and thus are easy prey to creepers and cons.
