Review of Catfish (2010) by Jebus C — 14 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers. As soon as we're introduced to the character "Megan" my first reaction was that Nev is a gullible idiot. But this is coming from someone who's chatted online since 1998.
There's this wonderful little invention called a webcam, which allows you to see people as they really are. If I'm talking to someone online and they don't have a cam then I don't believe they're who they say they are.
Its a simple process and its one that would have taken Catfish to pieces earlier than the directors wanted that to happen. According to the filmmakers this is how it all really played out, which makes Nev look pretty dumb.
Its like the idea that mobile phones cause enormous plot holes in modern movies. You have to add in the signal blackspot or a phone being lost as an additional line of dialogue. But here I was immediately suspicious and it bothered me that Nev wasn't.
So when the film got around to actually getting where it was going it had already lost me. Whether this was all staged is open for debate. Whether I actually care if it was staged isn't.
