Review of Catfish (2010) by Barry S — 13 Mar 2013
Catfish: Catfish bills itself as a "thriller and shocking." I'm not sure I'd call it that because as a movie, this is really unlike anything you've seen before. It's filmed entirely in the currently popular, candid, documentary style but it really isn't a "thriller or shocking.
" Most of the scenes are filmed in broad daylight so there isn't any attempt at manufactued creepiness. In truth, it is actually a very sad commentary on our times. You gain a lot of respect for Yaniv Schulman as this story unfolds.
Whether the film is true or not, it gives a ring of authenticity. Worth watching just from its unique perspective, just don't expect it to be a "shocking thriller." Did I say that before? What unfolds is entirely possible in today's social media world.
