Review of Catch-22 (1970) by Ashley C — 07 Aug 2011
I tried reading the book maybe 10 or 12 years ago. What I got out of the experience was a feeling that Heller and I were pretty much on the same page ideologically; however, I also felt that I was getting a series of vignettes that were essentially the same story told with slight variations, and after a while, the humor turned to tedium.
As a result, I got maybe a quarter of the way through before I put the book back on the shelf. Maybe it's Nichols's direction, maybe it's David Watkin's cinematography (and there were some great shots that are still sticking out in my mind), but I'm inspired to give the book another shot (and if this is a faithful adaptation, I do see that it goes beyond the limits that I initially perceived).
Good job, all involved.
