Review of Catch-22 (1970) by Nowak N — 04 Jun 2009
Mike Nichols does a good job filming an unfilmable book. Many of the little funny sequences are lifted right from the novel but the story is allowed to wander. The first half is a hilarious satire on bureaucracy but the second half becomes heavy handed and ponderous.
Amazing choreographed, full scale action sequences, especially the bombing of the base, add to the you are there feeling the film is trying to achieve. The cast is very good but many are underutilized.
The ending is very similar to Nichol's "The Graduate".
