Review of Cat People (1982) by Kevin M. W — 15 Sep 2011
For $25 that's all you get.
An ancient civilization sacrificed their women to leopards...who mated with them leading to the spawning of cat people. In present day there appears to be only two cat people remaining and they are brother and sister. The siblings try to blend in with civilization while also trying to find a means to survive and preserve their race.
"Only you can stop this killing. You've got to make love to me...as brother and sister.".
Paul Shrader, director of Affliction, The Walker, American Gigolo, and the upcoming Bait, delivers Cat People. The storyline for this picture is a bit ridiculous and reminded me of a poor man's Sleepwalkers. The acting and premise of the movie were both below par and the action scenes left me scratching my head. The cast includes Natassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowall, John Heard, Ed Begley, and Annette O'Toole.
"I prefer animals to people.".
I came across this film while flicking through the channels and decided to DVR it based on its interesting premise. The opening scenes had creative cinematography really grabbed my attention but as the film transitioned to modern day I became disappointed with the direction of this picture. Overall, this was a film that had potential but fell short of expectations.
"It mauled a hooker last night but we're all right.".
Grade: C-.
