Review of Cat People (1942) by Matthew R — 08 Mar 2008
Masterful psychological horror picture--extremely intelligent and frank about sexuality and psychology for an early Hollywood film. Good screenplay, good cast, and the direction from Tourneur is really quite something--he balances the seen and the unseen and the spoken and the unspoken with the grace and beauty of a trapeze artist, and few studio directors have ever had such an eye for photography and design.
Some of the greatest suspense sequences ever filmed, and a remarkable devotion to character. The film effectively melds the mythical archetype with the psyche, and the resulting horror is ominous and mysterious and real.
