Tourneur and Lewton succeed in creating a work of art as well as a genuinely scary, exciting, and intelligent movie. Simone Simon is perfect as Irena - it's hard to imagine any other actress of that period playing such a role.
A terrific study of a woman afraid of womanhood and a woman awakening to her own desire.
