1/4 the budget of Citizen Kane and 4 times the profit, Tourneur opened Hollywood eyes to the more-is-less principle and jury's out as to this being good or bad for us, the audience-goers. Simone Simon might be a cat-killer in shadow and innuendo, and it all looks good, you're reading (want to italicize that) as well as watching, dark & light, shadows deserving top billing.
