Review of Cat People (1942) by Ryan V — 20 Aug 2012
Irena (Simone Simon) is a Serbian fashion designer who is terrified of intimacy. She meets the man of her dreams (Kent Smith), but their marriage is strained by an overwhelming fear that she'll transform into a cat monster should she give in to her physical desire for him.
Cat People, produced by horror maestro Val Lewton and directed by the masterful Jacques Tourneau, attains its creepy mood with psychological suspense and the "fear of the unseen". It's also a surprisingly effective meditation on the social constraints built around carnality.
