Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Sunil K — 25 Jun 2008
Lot of melodrama and commendable acting histrionics by liz taylor and pul newman.............old classic..........given the year of release, this is as good a version of Williams' play as one could get...Emotionally charged story of repressed homosexuality (cleaned up for Hollywood at that time)...The scenes in the basement between Brick and his dying Big Daddy are very touching........
It's certainly the lead performances that shine........ Taylor was born to play Maggie the Cat - the moment when she straightens hers stockings, just encapsulates that part....................
Paul Newman is perfect as the drunk who can't or won't save himself..............
Burl Ives, gets the humanity of Big Daddy as well as the larger-than-life bluster. ....
A very fine movie - despite the censoring.
