Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Jack W — 08 Mar 2010
What a powerful and thought provoking film. The film raises questions that lie underneath our society, questions that are usually not ever asked. The question of a man's sexuality and the roles he must assume are central to the film.
More subtle though is the questions raised of the role of family and how people allow themselves to succumb to societal pressures. The performances by everyone involved are just outstanding and Newman and Taylor are not only fascinating but both jaw droppingly gorgeous.
Liz is just amazing in the role. I don't think I have ever seen her act as well or look as good. Just amazing. The film is kinda static because it is faithful to the play, but if you realize that story and character examination are preeminent to the film's core than that can be overlooked.
Great film.
