Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Adam B — 27 Mar 2011
The acting is really what drives this movie, with stellar performances from paul newman, elizabeth taylor, and burl ives. as an adaptation, it differs from the play in many ways, but I actually prefer the movie. sure, it has a happier and somewhat sappy ending, but i'm a sucker for those and it's refreshing when nowadays you have so much cynicism in movies.
My only real qualm with the movie-play differences is the toning down of brick's relationship with skipper, which makes brick's motivations unclear and weakens his character overall. of course, homosexuality was very taboo in 1958, so you can hardly blame richard brooks for toning it down.
