Review of Casualties of War (1989) by Hunter D — 14 Dec 2007
De Palma's emotionally draining Vietnam picture gives Michael J. Fox a chance to show his true acting chops. I'm used to seeing him act in these goofy comedies (which he's great at) but here he gives a very interesting and layerd performance.
Sean Penn rarely equals the intensity he puts on display here. The story's manipulative nature docks it a star, but overall it's an excellent morality play that shows how being in a place like Vietnam can cause the lines between right and wrong to blur beyond comprehension in some people.
It's a film that ultimately has a lot to say, and what it says is rarely dull.
