Casualties of War is the climax of De Palma's long and winding development of visual storytelling: a film that wrings tension out of every scene, beautifully juxtaposes dehumanization and the loss of innocence, and packs a tremendous emotional punch, all through the facial inflections of the actors and horrifying images.
