Review of Cast Away (2000) by C T — 16 Aug 2014
Who would have thought that all you would need to make a good movie is Tom Hanks and a Wilson volleyball? The blatant use of product placement never feels clunky or forced, as the inanimate, bloodstained volleyball becomes a character in and of itself as an outlet for Hank's need for "human" contact and interaction.
This movie is a fantastic depiction of how many--if not most--people would react to being stranded in the middle of nowhere, forced to abandon their previous skills and lives in an effort to survive. The movie progressively shows Hank's mental state deteriorate and become more desperate, until he ultimately seems irreparably primal, while maintaining an air of human desperation and morality.
