Review of Casshern (2004) by Michael L — 31 Oct 2007
OH ASIAN CINEMA!!!! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!! This is a film that I didn't even know existed but my brother rented and he insisted that I watch it and boy am I happy that I listened to him. Not to mention the fact that it's a member of good ole Asian cinema something in which I have fallen head over heels in love with. ^_^.
Oh where should I begin with this film?? Let me start off by saying this movie is down right a beautiful spectacle to see, visually speaking. The way they did this film is so original and so freaking awesome it's unreal. Live action actors on a back drop of CGI is just so beautiful.
Then you have the fact that the film is so action packed and adrenaline filled, which is important to me because I'm an action junky. There are many things you can say about the film visually because it is just absolutely amazing in that aspect. The fight sequences in the film were harcore, bad ass, and any other combination of words you can think of.
While the film is amazing in all of the ways I just described it does have it's faults, which are the only reason this movie isn't getting more than 4 stars. There are many plot holes in the film. Typically there are in a movie that is fueled by action such as this one. There were times when I felt the director was just trying to over exaggerate things so much that not even he knew exactly what he wanted to do with it. There were also parts when I was confused as to what was actually going on. But it doesn't take much away from the film itself.
Not only was this film beautiful visually but the acting in the film was very impressive as well. I know I haven't watched many Asian films but I have yet to see any of the actors in this film so they were unknown to me. Every one of the actors from the main stars of the film to the supporting cast did a great job.
This is a film that I would recommend to my action junky friends, the friends I have that love Asian cinema, and anyone that I think would appreciate the beauty of the film and that could appreciate that the director did something new, something that I have yet to see before. Pick this one up the next chance you get.
