Review of Casshern (2004) by Simon R — 05 Jul 2008
On the surface this could easily be seen as a slick, overproduced anime movie, but there is a more powerful story going on within. Yes, some parts are way too thick with stylized visuals and overall a better job could have been done with the fight sequences.
A lot seems to be obscured in a fog of graphics. However, the twisting plot and the beautiful ending are worth the mania. The story borrows heavily from the Western dystopia genre with obvious references to 1984 and a big hello to Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, but in the end it's about universal themes.
Good & Evil, love, fear and hatred with a profound statement about warfare and man's inhumanity.
