Review of Cassandra's Dream (2007) by Ollie W — 04 Aug 2010
I guess I went into this movie expecting it to be bad, but it was alright. The 2000's have not been a kind year for Woody Allen, so I was expecting the worst. Most of the performances are solid, but Colin Farrell is probably the best thing about this movie. He plays Ewan McGregor's brother, who is ridden with guilt and serious financial roles. He plays a very tragic character and is very convincing in his role. This is a good and bad thing because compared to Farrell's performance it makes McGregor look way out of his league. Also the score is haunting and complemented the movie's themes very well.
The main problem is that it takes forever for the ball to get rolling on this thing and I was a little bored after a while. Allen could have cut at least 20 minutes off of the film and it could have ran much smoother. The ending also felt forced and this is unfortunate because all of the suspense the film had is wasted. The ending wasn't bad, but not as satisfying as I thought it would be.
This film had the potential to be a good thriller, but Allen's script is not as strong as it could have been. It's worth a viewing, but it's a forgettable movie. If you are looking for a good Woody Allen thriller, then watch Match Point.
