Review of Casino (1995) by Ben K — 13 May 2013
Its a good film with a good story but when I compare it to Scorseeses Goodfellas all it is is THAT film in Vegas and with more usage of the word Fuck.
But I will say the more I watch this film the more it grows on me. It's maybe never going to be as entertaining for me as say Goodfellas or Taxidriver but It's an entertaining flick and all but I think the problem with it was the timing. It came out just four short years after Goodfellas which was an amazing film and huge impact on the gangster genere and so for scoreseese to follow up with that it must have been hard. It's not like he didn't try. I think the film is entertaining and great but no where near the caliber of Goodfellas. The story is okay and entertaining but unlike goodfellas where it talked about how the Mafia ran New York this talks about How the mafia ran the casino so it's not as...diversified maybe as Goodfeallas and thusly is a little dull it's also a little on the long side for a film that's really only focusing on the Tangier casino and how it's run by the crooked Teamsters. That's not to say the film is bad but it's just a little over long for the subject that it's tackling. But Like I said as the years have gone by the film has gotten to grow on me more and more and I think as the years have gone by I've gotten to like the film more. I don't think I'll ever like it as much as my two favorite Scoresese films(Goodfellas and Taxi Driver) but I think it'll be a film I'll def watch more and more as the years go by as apposed to when I first saw it and only watched it here and there.
The fact its a true story also helps but its still not QUITE as good as Goodfellas.
