Review of Cashback (2007) by James G — 20 Jan 2009
The very antithesis of the dumb, slap-bang, shallow American rom-com conveyer belt movie, (lately dominated by horror shows starring Kate Hudson or the insipid Matthew McConaughey or both), Cashback is a lullaby to insomnia, a love story impecably photographed, with a strangely soothing mostly blue & orange palette.
Carrying an adolescent sense of humour throughout, the story disappointingly curtails off in to standard boy-meets-girl territory by the end, but that in any case seems to play second fiddle to the message of taking time to appreciate the beauty around us in our everyday surroundings no matter how you choose to behold it. Oh, and it contains a lot of boobs, which everyone seems to be getting their knickers in a twist about, but honestly, a lad who discovers he can stop time (hallucinating or not) is going straight to the girl's changing rooms no question, so as this kid is an art student this is pretty mild in comparison. It does just about bob artfully above the smut line.
